A brief history of tungsten carbide development
Sep 03, 2017

Since 1893, German scientists have used tungsten trioxide and carbon in the furnace to heat the method to remove tungsten carbide, and tried to use its high melting point, high hardness and other characteristics to make the wire drawing die, in order to replace the diamond material. However, due to the brittleness of tungsten carbide, easy cracking and low toughness, the industrial application has not been obtained.

Into the the 1920s, the German scientist Karl Schroter research found that pure tungsten carbide can not adapt to the tensile process of the formation of intense stress changes, only the low melting point of the metal into the WC can not reduce the hardness of the condition, so that the blank has a certain toughness.

In 1923, Schroter first introduced the method of powder metallurgy, which was to mix tungsten carbide with a small amount of ferrous metal (iron, nickel, cobalt), then pressed the patent for producing hardness alloy by sintering in hydrogen above 1300 ℃ temperature.
